This course is suitable for people who want to work in the care or education environment with children or adults who have special needs. 

It is also suitable for those already working in this environment but who wish to obtain certification.

Course content:

Role and responsibilities of the Special Needs Assistant

Qualities and skills of an effective Special Needs Assistant

Relevant legislation in relation to disability

Rights of children with disabilities in relation to personal autonomy, participation and decision making

Relating effectively and appropriately to children who present with additional needs

Care routines in feeding, toileting and general hygiene

Appropriate relationships with children’s parents, primary carers, teachers and other members of the multidisciplinary team

Working effectively with children who present with disabilities under the direction of the classroom teacher

Assisting children with disabilities in a range of activities, ensuring equality of opportunity through working in a safe and professional manner

Reflecting on personal practice working with children, their parents or guardians and colleagues ensuring that children's individuality is promoted and that their needs are met

You will be required to arrange a period of work experience in a suitable environment during this module.
