Description

This Small Animal Husbandry & Housing module equips you with the knowledge and skills to become their champion! Spread conveniently over evenings, this course offers a comprehensive exploration of caring for a variety of furry, feathered, and even scaled companions.

We'll delve into the specific needs of each species, from playful pups and curious cats to chirping birds and fascinating reptiles. Understanding their dietary requirements – whether carnivorous, omnivorous, or herbivorous – is key, and you'll learn how to prepare and present food for optimal health. Creating a comfortable and secure environment is paramount. We'll explore diverse housing options for different animals, ensuring their enclosures prioritise safety, ease of management, and of course, a happy home.

This module goes beyond the basics. You'll discover the variety of bedding materials available and how to identify common illnesses that might affect your small companions. Ever wondered how a kennel or cattery operates? We'll take you behind the scenes, outlining the daily routines and responsibilities of animal carers, from cleaning and record-keeping to handling customer inquiries and ensuring animal welfare.

As you progress, you'll gain the ability to distinguish between male and female animals based on physical and behavioural traits. You'll learn to interpret signs of potential health issues and take appropriate action, whether it's recording symptoms, isolating the animal, seeking veterinary advice, or administering medication.

The course also emphasises the importance of hygiene protocols, proper waste disposal, and responsible breeding practices (should you choose to pursue that path). You'll learn to select appropriate disinfection methods, design enclosures adhering to size regulations, and implement safety measures to minimise the risk of zoonosis (diseases transmissible between animals and humans).

Understanding relevant animal welfare laws and regulations is crucial. We'll cover everything from fire safety protocols to staff training and insurance requirements, ensuring you're well-equipped to navigate the legalities of animal care.

By the end of this comprehensive module, you'll possess the knowledge and skills to confidently care for a diverse range of small animals, making you a valuable asset in any animal care setting. So, get ready to embark on a rewarding journey into the world of Small Animal Husbandry & Housing!
